We took many by surprise by announced the release of umbraco 4 beta at CodeGarden. For all of you who wasn't present, we've made a whitepaper and published some information at a mini site that is sure to get updated as umbraco 4 matures.

Umbraco 4 will be an incredible release that will set new standards of what to expect from a CMS - open source or not. Massive performance increase, better UI, support for ASP.NET MasterPages, Membership/Role providers, MySQL and much more.

On behalf of the whole core team I can say that this is the best release ever.

Wow, I've just read the umbraco v4 whitepaper and I really can't wait to see this all in action! Great job.

    Greetz,
    /Dirk

  2. Gravatar ImageDoogie Talons Says:

Wow, I'm just getting started with umbraco and already salivating at the thought of this release. Well done, and thanks.

  3. Gravatar ImageDenis Says:

So we will have fully integrated membership only by the end of this year?

  4. Gravatar ImageTommyp Says:

This definitely sounds good. Now, obviously someone has to pop the question: do you have any ideas about an approximated release date?

(this goes for the version 3.1 also)

  5. Gravatar ImageHartvig Says:

@Denis: Correct, MemberShip support is a central core change, which doesn't make it possible to do with a simple patch.

    @Tommyp: We've published milestones as a part of the v4 minisite: http://umbraco.org/umbraco-4---get-excited/milestones

v4 completely replaces v3.1. Releasing v4 would only take a few weeks more than releasing 3.1, so based on this, we found that the little delay was worth not having two major releases to maintain.

Just wondering if it is too late in the day to include an option of logging to the filesystem rather than the DB :)

  7. Gravatar ImageDavid Conlisk Says:

Nice one Niels! I tried to relate all of this information from Codegarden to my colleagures earlier in the week but I'd forgotten a lot of the details. It's great to have all of the new features enumerated on the site now, definitely helps in persuading people to adopt!

  8. Gravatar ImageJesper Ordrup Says:

Darren's idea is cool. Even better .. provide a logging interface so people can implement their favorite logging tools.

  9. Gravatar ImageSjors Pals Says:

True Darren, i have very good experiences with log4net, easy to implement and configure.

    Hi guys,

Just to let you know that I'll post instructions for package developers later, so that you know how to upgrade your current package to be compatible with other databases. Quite a lot of package don't need any updates however.

  11. Gravatar ImageSimon Justesen Says:

Will it require ASP.NET 3.5 or are you planning to continue along the ASP.NET 2.0 path? What is the status with regards to the compatibility with MONO?

  12. Gravatar ImageChristian Lanng Says:

Sure seems like a nice release!

So where can i find the aforementioned beta 1 for download, been looking around the codeplex site without much luck.

  13. Gravatar ImageKasper Ulvedal Says:

Thanks a lot ... It is very useful to me, and makes it pretty much easier to spot what actually happened in the V4...

And of course - Thank you for codegarden, it was pretty nice! ;)

  14. Gravatar ImageSaulius Says:

Would be nice if 4.0 beta 1 release would be in codeplex planed releases section. Now i'm not sure where is the latest source, nightly builds contains 3.1 folder only.

And one more - thanks and congratulations :) Looking forward to get hands on umbraco 4 :)

  15. Gravatar ImageMarco Lusini Says:

The PDF is unreadable with native viewer under OS X (both Mac and iPhone...) :(

  16. Gravatar ImageMichael Gillson Says:

Version 4 has improved speed. I am impressed because I thought this CMS already seemed faster than others I saw.
I can hardly wait to get started with version 4. I am new to Umbraco but I want to run against MySQL and possibly Oracle.

  17. Gravatar ImageSimon Justesen Says:

Saulius: The nightly builds denoted 3.1.xxxx are Umbraco 4 Beta 1 (at least the latest build). The naming policy is a little confusing, I don't know the reason for this

  18. Gravatar ImagePer Ploug Hansen Says:

@Simon The naming policy is because of sticking with the 3.1 version number untill the codegarden release of 4.0. to keep it as a surprise but also to avoid confusion if the 4.0 had last minute delays.

Will change naming of the builds and on codeplex during today

  19. Gravatar ImageMarco Lusini Says:

For those searching for nightly builds, you can find them at http://nightly.umbraco.org/

  20. Gravatar Imageeatme Says:

Please please fix the interface bugs and make umbraco work with firefox!

Bug fixes should be a much higher priority.

    Dont butcher tinyMCE again, please!

And last but not least please support mono!

  21. Gravatar ImageSimon Justesen Says:

@Per: Ah, okay - obvious now and very sneaky :)

  22. Gravatar ImageNiels Hartvig Says:

@eatme: If you took the time to read the docs you'll find that we're adding full Firefox support (http://umbraco.org/umbraco-4---get-excited/we-listened).

We'll have mono support when mono will have full support for ASP.NET. We don't have any current plans to modify or optimize the umbraco core for mono.

  23. Gravatar ImageSjors Pals Says:

Screw Mono, such a waste of time.

  24. Gravatar Imageeatme Says:

    @Niels Hartvig

Unfortunately i heard it all before.

"Cross platform interface that works on Windows, Mac and Linux"
    http://umbraco.org/tour/features/for-editors

Sad to hear your views on Mono, but thanks for making yourself clear! Suggest adding it to the FAQ

  25. Gravatar ImagePer Ploug Hansen Says:

@eatme - The tour text you are referencing was made for the 3.0 release where significant changes was made to the UI compatibility, compared to the 2.1 release. It was 99% there, except for the content pickers not working in some places.

But sure, fear the worst and point out flaws in a version you havn't even tested.

Regarding Mono: It's not a prority for 95% of our users or our users customers. It does compile on mono atm. but mono is simple not 100% compatible yet, (inspecially regarding the httphandler, appdomains, xslt rendering, and generics, needs a good deal of work...)

So we decided to spend our time on making sure the UI got an update instead. ;-)

  26. Gravatar ImageBiagio Paruolo Says:

    Yeah, v4...

It's good for new website project, especially for membership function?

  27. Gravatar ImageKalle Wibeck Says:

Hey, it's the end of june... Where's secret#1?

    // ; ) Kalle

  28. Gravatar Imageeatme Says:

@Per there have been __many__ more problems with firefox support then the content picker.

I'm happy to report that my 3.0.5 upgrade has solved everything i've had time to test. so for now i will take my cynics hat off and look forward to umbraco 4 with an open mind.

p.s. there is a mono discussion in the forums if anyone is interested.

  29. Gravatar ImageHeather Floyd Says:

This looks great - kudos to all the devs!!!

I can't wait for the new production-ready release!
