The final release candidate of Umbraco 4 is out and available for download at CodePlex.

The focus the past week have been on stability and fixing any serious issues. The last Release Candidate added error when deleting files and macros via the context menu and we’ve made sure that all that is working again.

We’ve also polished the Membership Provider, so that it’s 100% compatible with the umbraco content and members for security trimming. Word is also 100% compatible with Umbraco Content Channels including uploading images and charts and speaking of Content Channels, it also supports the umbraco tagging control now.

The internal search index have been upgraded to Lucene 2.0 and it’s better at auto correcting any errors and you can now also activate internal search dialog by pressing SPACE in the search box. Apart from this we’ve made a good bunch of UI polishing and upgraded jQuery to 1.3.1.

We’re confident that we’ll have a release of Umbraco 4 on Friday - YAY!

Download and full changelog at CodePlex.

This release is even worse than the last one (RC2)...

In RC2 the admin GUI was slow as hell, but it worked. In RC3 I get errors when trying to install packages... and if an error occure.... there is no way to uninstall or re-install the package without a lot of annoying manual handling!!! Thats is truly bad for a RC!

@Daniel: It would be a big help if you could give some info on your environment, both for the server (2003/2008/Vista/XP) and for the client that is slow (Browser, OS, etc).

Regarding packages it would also be helpful if you could write the steps to re-produce.

By giving us the information above we have a chance to investigate and fix the issues that makes you frustrated, otherwise we don't stand a chance to fix it within a reasonable timeframe.

    Thanks,
    Niels...

@Hartvig: The site is hosted by Surftown.

During installation everything looks OK, but the installation is not able to update web.config, so I have to do that manually. The read/write rights are set to 777 for that file.

I know from earlier that Umbraco on Surftown have some problems with XmlCache so that parameter is set to false in umbracoConfig file.

I'm using Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7 beta (build 7000) as OS and use IE 8 beta2 and FF 3.x as browsers.

I found that small packages installs via Package repositry (in admin interface) but the bigger Creative Web Suit or whats it called gives an error. When an error occurs during installation (time out or object not set to an instance...) some parts of the package gets installed, but it is not compkete and is not working. There is no good way to remove that package. I manually had to remove it from disk and database twice last night and was really frustrated.

You should make some kind of roolback function for package installations since it really can mess upp the site and the database.

I was hoping to go live with the site in one month and I am still decinding if there are any good CMS to use instead of building a custom one, I'm really hoping that Umbraco will be able to live up to my demands since I really enjoy the the working parts of it.

Surftown is still an "experimental" hosting provider, as their file permissions *can* be a problem.

This is what causes the problems with web.config not saving, and the xmlCache problems.

It is also what causes the problems during package installation. Umbraco can simply not save package information in the config files so when the install fails, umbraco cannot rollback to it's previuos state, and uninstall is not possible.

We'll make sure that package installs gets a proper warning if something is wrong, so you avoid that frustating experience again.

I would recommend you contact surftown support and talk to them about permissions for umbraco.
Especially the xmlCache issue would be important to resolve as it dramaticly improves your websites performance.

You can read more about which folders need modify permissions here:
    http://umbraco.org/documentation/books/install-umbraco-4-on-windows-vista/configure-iis-website

Alternatively, install umbraco on your local machine (follow the guide link above), build your site locally and then upload the files and migrate the Database. On some hosts this could be the prefered way to do it instead.

@Daniel: Try another host, ex. www.unoeuro.com (cheap!) or www.wannafind.dk

I´m running sites at both the mentioned hosts without any problem at all! Just ask them to set the permissions once, and you are flying! ;o)
